Destiny's Price

The Lecture, The Burrito and The Crazy Old Bitch

Excerpt from Red Crow's Field notes

Classes continue.  Old Man Hat was right about the council and the "right" way ot do things. I never meet such "structured" mages. I keep in mind something one of my mentors told me: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy" The exploration of the Library continues… more to follow.

Danny missed his morning study session, apparently he is dependent on a clock to tell him where to be.  The kid is a bundle of stress and anxiety topped off with an attitude.  Still worth trying to reach.  we shall see where this goes.

Michael asked about maybe summoning a Crow spirit to assist Danny. As we were talking about  it and the difference between crow and Raven people,  Prof. Chen arrived to impart her wisdom.  I see that her avatar is a good match…  Apparently she is unaware that Danny is Michael's apprentice and that the "institution" should be given precedence over his instruction.  Not a promising start.  She is fairly rigid but that might be do to all of the "right" ways that exist in on this hill. It amazes me how high they think their hill is, a perfect beacon on the hill.   Prof. Chen  continued to "instruct" us in "proper" behaviour.  It was not well received.   Prof. Chen decided to challenge Michael to some sort of hermetic duel.  I do not think it would be good idea to fight the Dragon, but  the "rules" around here support the hidebound ones.   Prof. Marisol appeared, she sensed a disturbance in the force.  She tried to sooth the ruffled feathers, in her most soothing voice…  apparently talking over students is okay, talking over professors is not.  I bailed to the Library.

Apparently Hallai is very adept at summoning Burritos.  The Connection house threw another party.  MMMMMMM burritos!  I dragged Chuck along to the party, that bo is too quiet.  After an ejoyable party and a long talk with Marisol, we got ready for the peace summit with Mama Rosa and the Brujahs.

Ghost drove us to the World Beat Centre, the neutral ground. We took a round about way to the Centre, per Ghost to avoid the Freeways as he does not like them.  I wondered at the time if it was to avoid the Brujah territory.  Ghost denied it rather forcefully and became angry. The lady doth protest too much, methinks.   The Spirit of the place was rather powerful, if a bit reserved.   In the "peace" summit were myself, Nick, Hallai, Michael, Chuck and Doug from the college. Ghost decided to stay outside, smoking after delivering a lecture that we were not to bring up who was the original inhabitants of the land.  Hallai's people or the decedents of  Los Aztecas  and the Europeans.  These turf wars make one blind.

The moderator was Santos Muerto, top hat with silver charms, attendant ghosts and all. He seems to be a speaker with the dead.  I don't think all of his attendants were in his service willingly.  He maybe a useful ally, if not a completely trusted one.  He is extended family with Abuela Maria,  so there is that.

On the other side was Mama Rosa,  looking like the Lady de Guadalupe,  a  rose in her hair, decked out in  numerous rings. No doubt to impress us with her wealth and power.  A better presentation would have been to slay the bane that claimed more than one hundred people in  her "territory."  But she is not that kind of mage…  2.5e  seems to have gotten his diplomacy training from her.  the meeting started off  okay as i made apologies for the inadvertent trespassing on their "territory" but it went downhill fast when  the attack om 2.5e was brought up.  Also she called me a "gringo" and lumped us in with the college folk.  I tried to explain that I did not agree with the "policies" of the folk on the hill, but she showed at that point that she was not really here to make peace but to make a point to Santos Muertos.  I may have lost  my cool and called her a crazy old bitch, but  that could have been Rattlesnake talking.  Needless to say Mama Rosa stormed out after some parting remarks in Spanish.  She apparently thinks the Aztecas were in San Diego county in the past. She thinks this is Asland.  Old Man Hat has told me stories about people thinking the Land belong to them rather than the other way round.  Her spirit is poisoned with anger.  Not sure if this is a relation that can be saved this time round. I am thinking that I am the only one who speaks in our little group. Next time I will let one of the others take the lead.

I spoke to Papa Muetos afterwards,  I gave him my contact information. Perhaps he and his family might become friends of me and mine.  The Spirit of the place turned cold and unwelcoming as Mama Rosa left,  not really a neutral ground if the spirit is inclined to one side.  Papa Muertos signaled his support for us  and the Spirit relented.  And then the ride home…

Ghost is a mix of speaker and electronic adept.  sometime i think the silver webs and CRT glow are winning.  He became anger whe i suggested that his route here was to avoid the Brujah's territory.  He pulled his phone.  I was concerned with the level anger and the little vein in his temple that was throbbing… not sure he should be driving.  As Phil said: "Don't drive Angry."

Michael maybe leaving the college as facility manager due to creative difference with the hidebound ones.  He gave them two weeks.  I not really sure what the Headmaster is going to do to change the situation. But  we shall see.

Dr. Cornelious

I am writing to make a formal complaint against Dr. Chen Xi.

After I turned in my incident report to  Dr. Finn, I re-joined with my friends on campus, letting them know that, at least for now, there’d be no repercussions for the incidents of the previous evening.

I was approached by my nephew and apprentice, Daniel, who seemed excessively excited by the idea that we’d done violence to some “Hedge Wizards.”  As I tried to convince him to curb his enthusiasm, and perhaps his language, he basically asserted to me that it’s not a problem, as he can take any of them in a fight (“I eat malandanti for breakfast”).  When pressed on that point, he “remember he had a Matter midterm to study for” and scurried off.

Concerned at my apprentice’s enthusiasm for violence, even toward other members of the student body, I resolved to enlist Red Crow’s aid in summoning a spirit to watch over him, like the owl sent to instruct Doug, but less stentorian, and hopefully more capable of encouraging restraint… or enforcing it, should violence be imminent.

Unfortunately, this plan was not without interference.  Chen Xi, resident Verbena and Doctor of Life, forbade me from summoning anything, full stop.   I gave her opinion all the consideration it was due.  Unhappy at not being obeyed by a staff member who is in no way under her command, she challenged me to certámen should I proceed.  So I accepted.

At this point, for some reason, a crowd had gathered and Marisol came over to smooth things over.  It was suggested, with some name-calling as well as in calmer tones, that I should surrender Daniel’s tutelage and trust in the wisdom of the institution.  This is the same institution, by the way, that, when I attempted acquire for Daniel remedial education in fields in which I did feel ill-equipped to teach him myself, told me that he was on his own and that if he needed any help that he deserved to fail.

Chen only relented, mind you, when faced with the possibility of facing Marisol in the certámen circle.  Which was itself a public withdrawal.

To be specific, my complaint is that she

  • Knowingly intefered with my responsibilities toward my apprentice
  • Lacking any legitimate authority to back up such interference, sought to intimidate me with an overt threat
  • Vocally and loudly harangued me publicly, in front of students

The consequence of her actions are that

  • My apprentice overheard her biased characterization of my actions and responded with excessive defensive action, preventing me from placing any monitor upon his activities to prevent violent or inappropriate behavior.
  • Loss of confidence, at least on my part, in the department of Life magick on this campus
  • Poor representation of both faculty and staff to the student body.
  • In general, I feel less safe at this school

In my opinion, the following courses of action would be advisable:

  • Advise Dr. Chen to acknowledge the limits of her authority.
  • Advise Dr. Chen to study methods of conflict resolution other than barking orders and certámen
  • Keep this complaint on file, and consider whether any future allegation or action Chen aims at me has merit, or is the product of animus.
