Date of Incident XX/XX/XXXX

Police Notified  Yes ☑ No

Location of Incident: Old Central Library, 820 E St

Description of Incident (what happened, how it happened, factors leading to the event, etc.) Be as specific as possible (attached additional sheets if necessary):

I volunteered to serve as an escort for several students off-campus for dinner and drinks.  Our group included Charles Winthrop III, Douglas Quinn, Hallai, Nic Smith, Sean Red Crow, my nephew Daniel, and of course Basker.  While we were out, Hallai went to buy some stuff from a street vendor, who told us to be on our guard, because a "chupacabra" was around.  Once our senses were up, we caught wind of the Resonance of a monster.  Some extra research (thank Nic for that) revealed some kind of fat-eating demon possessing a man in a three-piece suit, who had already killed at least a hundred victims, and probably more.

I sent Daniel back to the university, escorted by one of the university's owl spirits.  Then we, the more experienced magi present, chose to pursue.   We had Basker track it, which eventually led us through a camp of homeless people in front of the old library.  We were having a perfectly civil conversation with some of the "food not bombs" folks there, when some guy calling himself "Five Elements" rolled up with a posse of five (obviously) potent elementals and started making threats.

I feel that I should interject a number of things at this point:

First, I think Red Crow should be commended on his diplomacy.  He kept a cool head, even while Five Elements was throwing some seriously racist shade.  And also dissing the Traditions, but mostly the racist stuff.

Second, I 100% support Hallai's decision to lay the fucker out.  I got a good look at him on multiple levels, and the man is a black hole of selfishness and malice.  He came spoiling for a fight and fabricating excuses to pick one, and I saw no indication of kid gloves.   The fact that he's also primal and powerful only makes it worse, not a redeeming characteristic.  His only poor decision was misplaced mercy in not finishing the job.

Third, something is seriously up here.  I've lived here for years, been all over this city for both work and play, and I've never had a petty thug come this hard at me for being a thousand feet from the trolley station.

Fourth, we really need to stop calling them "hedge witches."  It shows disrespect to both the Crafts and the actual hedge-witches (many of whom are, ironically, members of good standing in the Traditions).  But also, it conjures the image of kindly old women on the edge of town, not violent thugs.

Anyway, after a lot of pissing and dick-measuring, Nic managed to call us an Uber, but on our way out, Hallai managed to hit 5E with some kind of spirit bomb as a parting shot.  5E collapsed, but seemed to still be alive.

We proceeded to La Jolla to complete the mission.  We ghosted into his apartment and eliminated the demon, which had the unfortunate if predictable consequence of destroying the host.  Once we got a better whiff of the fomor's Resonance, we determined that it smells like THE EXILED.

Our current theory is that the fomor was put out to stir up trouble between us and the Crafts in the city.  So, yeah, we stepped in that one.

Were there any witnesses to the incident? ☑ Yes  No

If yes, attach separate sheet with names, addresses, and phone numbers.

Two members of "Food Not Bombs" saw 5E collapse, but witnessed to overt acts of magic.  There were no direct witnesses to the action against the fomor; he did manage to call the police before we silenced him, but all they heard were some strange sound effects before we absconded through the Umbra.  I have his phone, we ca see who he was in contact with.

Was the individual injured? If so, describe the injury (laceration, sprain, etc.), the part of body injured, and any other information known about the resulting injury(ies).

Five Elements was rendered unconscious and probably suffered internal injuries from a Primal spirit blast.  He looked to be still breathing, but we didn't hang around to check him out.

During the altercation, an imp of fear and madness attached itself to Chuck, but other casualties were at a minimum.

Hallai blew up the fomor.

Was medical treatment provided? ☑ Yes ☑ No  Refused

If yes, where was treatment provided: ☑ on site  Urgent Care  Emergency Room  Other

No treatment was provided to 5E by us.  If we're lucky he bled out.

No treatment was provided to the fat-eater.  He's pâté now.

The imp attached to Chuck was bound and attacked.  Success of treatment still unclear.

excerpt from Red Crow’s field notes:
Marisol—assignment Petroglyphs 5 paragraphs? 5 glyphs
she seems book bound for a Dreamspeaker, but it is as Old Man Hat warned.
Some female student was yelling about learning as I listened to the “lecture.”
Later that day:
Old Town, drinks and dinner with Michael, Danny, Basker, Nic, Chuck, Doug, and Hallai.
We spoke to an abuela, Maria, who sells trinkets to the tourists and more specialized things to those who know how to ask for them. Michael purchased another rosary, Hallai some special tea… Maria warned us of a Chupacabra in the area. Something foul has been leaving tracks around the city. Old Town is awash in spirits, most are not aware of the living. There are quiet spaces here as well. I would like to speak with Maria again, perhaps we can be of assistance to each other.
Michael set Basker the task of tracking the bane. Basker did not seem to relish the hunt. Not sure if he was concerned for Michael or the corruption was more than he could stand. Will need to restock treats for Basker.
We followed the trail of the bane through Old Town, the entity was bound to a human host, there is always the possibility of removing the bane, although in this case, we would find out that the unfortunate’s spirit was all but destroyed. We continued on the Trolley. Basker altered us to the correct stop. As we disembarked, there were signs that marked this as under the control of some local Brujas, the signs did not make me feel warm nor fuzzy. I informed Michael and Hallai of the signs. We decided to proceed after the spoor.
We followed the spoor to the Old Library, there instead of a place of joy and knowledge we found an encampment of homeless, the ones the shining society would pretend are invisible. The bane had been hunting them, per the research of Nic at least 100 people had been slain. I do not understand people of power not looking after their charges. these local brujas are either stupid and incompetent or they are in league with the bane, neither option gives me much hope.
I spoke to the spirit of the Library, it was asleep, dreaming of the books it used to keep. I left a couple of paperbacks as an offering. Perhaps someone will find them of use and bring a little joy into this dreary place. The Old Library ha seen the bane and the flesh it wore, its description was vague but i thank it never the less. I hope to keep in contact with the Old Library, maybe we can revitalize it. Of course we will need to deal with the brujas first.
As I watched over Michael on his dreaming to contact the last victim of the bane, I saw a will worker approach surrounded by five rather powerful elementals… Water, Electricity, Metal, Fire, and Earth.
The will worker gave his name as Five Elements, I did wonder if he was talking about that burger joint but things went down hill from there.
Apparently the local brujas are not much for diplomacy nor subtly. 5E decided that threats and racial slurs were in order. Needless to say my brother Hallai did not react well to the verbal taunts. I thought that we may have escaped outright physical violence as NIc called for an Lyft and I was able to convince Hallai to get in the vehicle, but things did not go as planned. 5E gave me a couple of bits of information, Mama Rose is the leader or at least the person to talk to about traveling downtown. Not sure how these brujas and the college folk live in a divided town but neither side sees any worth in the other. Long term project?
As we started to leave, 5E took another parting verbal shot at us and well Hallai responded. 5E and was rendered unconscious and several of the elementals were dissipated. I will refer to 5E now as 2.5E.
There was much discussion in the Lyft about actions and reactions, future warfare and kill orders. The glyphs hung around the bruja territory flashed red and apparently there is a standing kill order. As i said, these brujas lack diplomacy, subtly and have no sense of community outside of their coven. it is disgraceful that they ignore a bane hunting in their “territory”, killing the people they are supposed to protect.
During the ride to the bane’s lair in La Jolla, Michael called Ghost… that did not go over well. Ghost has seems to have bought the Council’s reality, Old Man Hat did warn me of Council will workers. Michael also call the Dean, Dr. Finn. That seemed to go even worse, but he is a member of the order… I leave it at that. Doug was very helpful in hiding the conversations from the Lyft driver.
Upon arriving at the location in La Jolla, we discussed plans in the dog park near the bane’s building. The park itself was a bright spot of green, well maintained and cared for…I wonder who.
Doug did not want to travel through the Other side, preferring a more mundane larcenous approach.
Michael, Nic, and I travelled via the Other side while Hallai, Chuck, and Doug used a stolen key card from an unsuspecting dog walker to enter the building on this side. Doug convinced the spirits in the cameras to replay the same loop over and over to keep them from being discovered.
Michael, Nic and I found the building to be a construct of glowing spiderwebs, maintained by several spider gafflings. Nic was tempted to “take them apart” to see how they were constructed, I had to remind him that the spirits were not toys to be dismantled and they should be respected as is. He seemed to lose interest as he attempted to apparate us to the bane’s lair. I do not think he has ever been to the Other side before. He seemed a little unsure of his bearings. I gave him a stone with a cord wrapped around it to help him understand the lay of the land. I was impressed by the speed and accuracy of his magic.
We waited for our friends to move through the physical world to the door. When we were set in front of 4-F on both sides, Doug opened the door.
The bane was a thing of mouths and teeth, tethered to the husk of a man. I could see that even if we could dislodge the bane, there was not enough of the man’s spirit left to survive as a human. Michael used his faith magic to burn the bane, I used my Rattle to extol it to leave the man and go, but it was our Red Spear brother who used his acorn to destroy the bane from the inside. he had gathered together the innocents that fell prey to the bane and gave them the power to destroy it. Apparently in the physical world this cause the man’s body to explode in a great woosh of gore and bile. Doug seemed unamused but okay. Chuck fainted. Apparently Chuck is a bit sensitive, who could have known? I did see the gaffling attached to him, I will keep an eye on him. We brought the others over to the Other side, retrieved the man’s cell phone and had Basker lead us back to campus. Good dog.
I collected some of the spiritual residue from the bane perhaps we can track it back to its summoner. I would like to see the man at rest, no one deserves to be ridden by a bane.

Minority Report

Note: Since I am in classes and also spending a whole lot of time with Sean and Hallai, I’m spending 3 experience points to buy a dot of Cosmology so I can quit blundering around quite so blindly in the Spirit realms.
