Destiny's Price

A return of Spirit, a respite, a setup, and an explosion...
RedCrow Field Notes

RedCrow's field notes:

The schooling continues… classes are interesting in that learning how some people organize their minds,  apparently  they consider be rigid a bonus, perhaps too many spiders not enough coyotes?  The walls here are think and stubborn.  There are Rules for everything. Of course taking care of the Peoples seems not to be a high priority rule.

Released Archimedes from his watch, no noticeable improvement. A good  rain will need to wash away the ash.

..Made a rather disturbing discovery in the stacks… romance is in the air… and on the floor.  At least Annie got a show.

Burrito Party was a success,  Sushi and Sausage? I guess with enough alcohol anything become palatable.  I begin to see why they all drink here.

Need to spend more time in meditation on roof,  Sage  and Rosemary.

Success,  Cascabel has agreed to travel with me for a time.

Nic found a enchanted book under his bed.  Fallen Earth, special  edition trade paperback, mint condition… bit of magic right there for 22 year old book. Nic read it, Hallai read it, Michael read it… i hitched a ride with Michael and his speed reading trick.  Does seem to take the enjoyment out of a book, not that there was much in there.  They  described Atlantis wrong per Old Man Hat.   There is a spell to open a portal to….?  I wonder  who will be the first to cast the spell?

Nic traced the  book back to previous owners/ bearers of the book.  He talked about webs and fractals,  smoke and mirrors.  i wonder if one of Spider's People could help us run the web…  one of the threads lead to our friend Dougie of the ashes. I think a rather large thunder storm might be in his near future.  He  is sick with drink, not much for socializing.   He was not impressed by the RA Richards forced sobriety potion. I will need to ask him about that… Doug  was deceitful and belligerent. the sobriety seems only to further aggravated his disagreeableness.  I communed with the House Forces Spirit.  A very dynamic and bold personality.  Good sense of humor.  Have to bring a gift next time.   Hallai, Michael, and Nic spoke to Doug.  Hallai seems to have put something together regarding his father, a stone, and a nameless one.  They let Doug succumb to his vices.

On the way back to the Library, we encounter a rampaging Headmaster… It seems the two weeks of quiet were his  doing.  Not sure why he did not reach out to Michael prior to the end of the two weeks.  Marisol and I made amends. Chen, not so much.  Apparently the Headmaster does not like to have his authority questioned, not does he respond well to questions. I guess this is why he is an administrator.  He does like his power, rules, and  "authority."   He took offense at my observation that the college is to rigid and hidebound. So as it stands now, Michael might be leaving the campus… Although if he has an Alumni card, doesn't that mean he  is an alumni? strange rules…   Hallai told Michael to remain calm…I know, stop laughing.   Hallai also sent the Headmaster towards Dougie, explaining his role in the book and the connection that were unearthed.

Will need to see about planting more sage on campus if i stay.

The Lecture, The Burrito and The Crazy Old Bitch
Excerpt from Red Crow's Field notes

Classes continue.  Old Man Hat was right about the council and the "right" way ot do things. I never meet such "structured" mages. I keep in mind something one of my mentors told me: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy" The exploration of the Library continues… more to follow.

Danny missed his morning study session, apparently he is dependent on a clock to tell him where to be.  The kid is a bundle of stress and anxiety topped off with an attitude.  Still worth trying to reach.  we shall see where this goes.

Michael asked about maybe summoning a Crow spirit to assist Danny. As we were talking about  it and the difference between crow and Raven people,  Prof. Chen arrived to impart her wisdom.  I see that her avatar is a good match…  Apparently she is unaware that Danny is Michael's apprentice and that the "institution" should be given precedence over his instruction.  Not a promising start.  She is fairly rigid but that might be do to all of the "right" ways that exist in on this hill. It amazes me how high they think their hill is, a perfect beacon on the hill.   Prof. Chen  continued to "instruct" us in "proper" behaviour.  It was not well received.   Prof. Chen decided to challenge Michael to some sort of hermetic duel.  I do not think it would be good idea to fight the Dragon, but  the "rules" around here support the hidebound ones.   Prof. Marisol appeared, she sensed a disturbance in the force.  She tried to sooth the ruffled feathers, in her most soothing voice…  apparently talking over students is okay, talking over professors is not.  I bailed to the Library.

Apparently Hallai is very adept at summoning Burritos.  The Connection house threw another party.  MMMMMMM burritos!  I dragged Chuck along to the party, that bo is too quiet.  After an ejoyable party and a long talk with Marisol, we got ready for the peace summit with Mama Rosa and the Brujahs.

Ghost drove us to the World Beat Centre, the neutral ground. We took a round about way to the Centre, per Ghost to avoid the Freeways as he does not like them.  I wondered at the time if it was to avoid the Brujah territory.  Ghost denied it rather forcefully and became angry. The lady doth protest too much, methinks.   The Spirit of the place was rather powerful, if a bit reserved.   In the "peace" summit were myself, Nick, Hallai, Michael, Chuck and Doug from the college. Ghost decided to stay outside, smoking after delivering a lecture that we were not to bring up who was the original inhabitants of the land.  Hallai's people or the decedents of  Los Aztecas  and the Europeans.  These turf wars make one blind.

The moderator was Santos Muerto, top hat with silver charms, attendant ghosts and all. He seems to be a speaker with the dead.  I don't think all of his attendants were in his service willingly.  He maybe a useful ally, if not a completely trusted one.  He is extended family with Abuela Maria,  so there is that.

On the other side was Mama Rosa,  looking like the Lady de Guadalupe,  a  rose in her hair, decked out in  numerous rings. No doubt to impress us with her wealth and power.  A better presentation would have been to slay the bane that claimed more than one hundred people in  her "territory."  But she is not that kind of mage…  2.5e  seems to have gotten his diplomacy training from her.  the meeting started off  okay as i made apologies for the inadvertent trespassing on their "territory" but it went downhill fast when  the attack om 2.5e was brought up.  Also she called me a "gringo" and lumped us in with the college folk.  I tried to explain that I did not agree with the "policies" of the folk on the hill, but she showed at that point that she was not really here to make peace but to make a point to Santos Muertos.  I may have lost  my cool and called her a crazy old bitch, but  that could have been Rattlesnake talking.  Needless to say Mama Rosa stormed out after some parting remarks in Spanish.  She apparently thinks the Aztecas were in San Diego county in the past. She thinks this is Asland.  Old Man Hat has told me stories about people thinking the Land belong to them rather than the other way round.  Her spirit is poisoned with anger.  Not sure if this is a relation that can be saved this time round. I am thinking that I am the only one who speaks in our little group. Next time I will let one of the others take the lead.

I spoke to Papa Muetos afterwards,  I gave him my contact information. Perhaps he and his family might become friends of me and mine.  The Spirit of the place turned cold and unwelcoming as Mama Rosa left,  not really a neutral ground if the spirit is inclined to one side.  Papa Muertos signaled his support for us  and the Spirit relented.  And then the ride home…

Ghost is a mix of speaker and electronic adept.  sometime i think the silver webs and CRT glow are winning.  He became anger whe i suggested that his route here was to avoid the Brujah's territory.  He pulled his phone.  I was concerned with the level anger and the little vein in his temple that was throbbing… not sure he should be driving.  As Phil said: "Don't drive Angry."

Michael maybe leaving the college as facility manager due to creative difference with the hidebound ones.  He gave them two weeks.  I not really sure what the Headmaster is going to do to change the situation. But  we shall see.

Date of Incident XX/XX/XXXX

Police Notified  Yes ☑ No

Location of Incident: Old Central Library, 820 E St

Description of Incident (what happened, how it happened, factors leading to the event, etc.) Be as specific as possible (attached additional sheets if necessary):

I volunteered to serve as an escort for several students off-campus for dinner and drinks.  Our group included Charles Winthrop III, Douglas Quinn, Hallai, Nic Smith, Sean Red Crow, my nephew Daniel, and of course Basker.  While we were out, Hallai went to buy some stuff from a street vendor, who told us to be on our guard, because a "chupacabra" was around.  Once our senses were up, we caught wind of the Resonance of a monster.  Some extra research (thank Nic for that) revealed some kind of fat-eating demon possessing a man in a three-piece suit, who had already killed at least a hundred victims, and probably more.

I sent Daniel back to the university, escorted by one of the university's owl spirits.  Then we, the more experienced magi present, chose to pursue.   We had Basker track it, which eventually led us through a camp of homeless people in front of the old library.  We were having a perfectly civil conversation with some of the "food not bombs" folks there, when some guy calling himself "Five Elements" rolled up with a posse of five (obviously) potent elementals and started making threats.

I feel that I should interject a number of things at this point:

First, I think Red Crow should be commended on his diplomacy.  He kept a cool head, even while Five Elements was throwing some seriously racist shade.  And also dissing the Traditions, but mostly the racist stuff.

Second, I 100% support Hallai's decision to lay the fucker out.  I got a good look at him on multiple levels, and the man is a black hole of selfishness and malice.  He came spoiling for a fight and fabricating excuses to pick one, and I saw no indication of kid gloves.   The fact that he's also primal and powerful only makes it worse, not a redeeming characteristic.  His only poor decision was misplaced mercy in not finishing the job.

Third, something is seriously up here.  I've lived here for years, been all over this city for both work and play, and I've never had a petty thug come this hard at me for being a thousand feet from the trolley station.

Fourth, we really need to stop calling them "hedge witches."  It shows disrespect to both the Crafts and the actual hedge-witches (many of whom are, ironically, members of good standing in the Traditions).  But also, it conjures the image of kindly old women on the edge of town, not violent thugs.

Anyway, after a lot of pissing and dick-measuring, Nic managed to call us an Uber, but on our way out, Hallai managed to hit 5E with some kind of spirit bomb as a parting shot.  5E collapsed, but seemed to still be alive.

We proceeded to La Jolla to complete the mission.  We ghosted into his apartment and eliminated the demon, which had the unfortunate if predictable consequence of destroying the host.  Once we got a better whiff of the fomor's Resonance, we determined that it smells like THE EXILED.

Our current theory is that the fomor was put out to stir up trouble between us and the Crafts in the city.  So, yeah, we stepped in that one.

Were there any witnesses to the incident? ☑ Yes  No

If yes, attach separate sheet with names, addresses, and phone numbers.

Two members of "Food Not Bombs" saw 5E collapse, but witnessed to overt acts of magic.  There were no direct witnesses to the action against the fomor; he did manage to call the police before we silenced him, but all they heard were some strange sound effects before we absconded through the Umbra.  I have his phone, we ca see who he was in contact with.

Was the individual injured? If so, describe the injury (laceration, sprain, etc.), the part of body injured, and any other information known about the resulting injury(ies).

Five Elements was rendered unconscious and probably suffered internal injuries from a Primal spirit blast.  He looked to be still breathing, but we didn't hang around to check him out.

During the altercation, an imp of fear and madness attached itself to Chuck, but other casualties were at a minimum.

Hallai blew up the fomor.

Was medical treatment provided? ☑ Yes ☑ No  Refused

If yes, where was treatment provided: ☑ on site  Urgent Care  Emergency Room  Other

No treatment was provided to 5E by us.  If we're lucky he bled out.

No treatment was provided to the fat-eater.  He's pâté now.

The imp attached to Chuck was bound and attacked.  Success of treatment still unclear.

Welcome to the Dollhouse
First day of spring quarter.

Hallai, Sean, and Forge are assigned three first years to give a tour around campus for their first day. They meet Douglas, Daniel, and Charles.

Mike comes along to ensure his nephew get's a proper tour of the facilities, including an up close look at the sealed gateway to the former Horizon. It is impressed upon the first years that this place is dangerous and they are NEVER to return.

Afterwards there is a tour of the library lead by Sean. A moment of cultural insensitivity by Doug leads to the summoning of a powerful Owl spirit named Archimedes. This spirit ruffles feathers, pun intended, and lands "Dougie" in the infirmary. This chain of events leads to Daniel learning an important lesson about assumptions, privilege, and the problematic nature of Disney Films.

Overall, an interesting first day.
